The Best Paid Player in the NFL
Eli Manning renewed his contract for 6 more years and $97 million more. The quarterback from the New York Giants is now officially the single highest paid player in the NFL with an annual salary of $15.3 million. $35 million of those are guaranteed in an agreement that will keep him with the Giants until 2015.
Manning led the Giants as they surprised the world in Super Bowl XLII against the New England Patriots back in February of 2008.
Until they won that Super Bowl title, Eli was considered the “little brother.” Now, he sits atop the salary rankings, surpassing the Oakland Raider cornerback Nnamdi Asomug who has an average annual salary of $15.1 million. He also left his brother Peyton Manning in the dust.
Though Manning is a luxurious quarterback, it is true that there are other NFL teams that have equally talented players that don’t earn those same figures. We can name a few like Tom Brady and Drew Brees.
As time passes, if these quarterbacks step their game up, we will soon hear more news about other contract extensions and increases in salary rivaling that of Eli Manning’s. And of course, negotiations will be based off of Manning’s contract.
Eli Manning took the reins of his team during his rookie year (mid-season) and led the Giants to the playoffs in the last 4 seasons. Last year he was selected to the Pro Bowl due to his 3,238 passing yards and 21 touchdowns. Manning has been the starting QB for 71 games, the third longest streak in the league.
